Holy crap, this chart of data from the US Dept. of Commerce is *wild*

construction of data centers is on an increasing trajectory ...

... while construction of nearly everything else (housing, commercial properties, etc) is on a decreasing trajectory

it's a zoomed-in scale on the chart, but this trend would be striking even zoomed out

As Josh Marshall writes, in that op-ed:

@clive A concerted push toward a Matrix-style society is the only logical conclusion. (Sarcasm, sort of.)

@clive @TPM the scale is deceptive, with $133billion/month spent on construction in the US.
