It continually astonishes me how much of the Internet is just slop powered by cPanel and WordPress. You don’t even need LLMs to make slop. You can just throw up a website with cPanel and WordPress. There are people in this world whose entire jobs revolve around this ecosystem and they don’t even know what a CVE is or even care. I know, I help operate a small hosting provider as a side gig (it doesn’t pay much lmao).

As for what usually goes on these websites? Well of course AI bullshit. But before that? Content mill slop. There was an entire ecosystem of heavily exploited writers that created SEO content. Sometimes it’d be for a small company client who just needed a website and the guy found someone who seemed to work suspiciously cheap. Other times it’s just a whole outfit designed to generate revenue through getting you to click the link before a reputable source.

We’re different! Trust us!

I don't know what to tell you, I never used any of those, but Wafrn is the one Fediverse platform that I know that presents itself as "Tumblr-inspired". Don't know if there are others, but this one's the most popular for sure. It also connects with Bluesky.

Those who ignore the plight of the Palestinians today are destined to be the Palestinians of tomorrow.

If you don’t think you’ll be next, you’re living in a privilege-fuelled fantasy world. Your inaction is showing them exactly what they can get away with when they finally turn their attention on you.

@InfiniteNutshell Ironically I actually could have finished this last night within my deadline but I was too busy updating my servers for PHP and "4"

imagine the world where instead of the other fic Shinji and Warhammer 40k was the fic all of silicon valley based an ideological cult around

it wouldn't be better, or really more or less funny stupid &c but it would be all of those things in a slightly differently embarrassing way and that's interesting to ponder

That was my experience with Pillowfort. It seemed to be a fun club to be a part of, but God did I feel out of touch, I was soooo lost.

Wafrn is wild. I don’t use it regularly, but everytime I go there, there are walls of custom emoji reactions, individuals who post wild stuff I don’t understand and hundreds reacting to it with custom emojis that I don’t know the meaning of. I love it.

Maybe some of its users will join the Fediverse? But where should they go, I don’t think there’s a federated Tumblr clone.

I wonder how seminal fanfic beloved by tvtropes "Shinji and Warhammer 40k" holds up.

probably like absolute ass right? probably real bad.

Tonight on Star Trek: Voyager
Kes ignores the prime directive however never really resolves the Klingon problem.

and for the record, I am not Eevee of "fractal of bad design" fame; I am sure people have mixed up me and @eevee before. Understandable, we're both cute girls who had a Passionate PHP Hater phase in our distant youths. But I'm a knockoff vocaloid and she's a pokemon. Completely different!

This was eevee's original extremely famous blog post: https://eev.ee/blog/2012/04/09/php-a-fractal-of-bad-design/ which also largely does not apply to PHP As She Is Meant To Be Spoke in 2026, but you can use it as a guide for how not to design a language or other complex software system.

Feeling inadequate because everyone on Mastodon appears to be an author or a lawyer or a scientist?

Follow me and feel better about yourself, for I have the intellect of a clever potato.

We're doing another special #BoilingTheOcean event later this year in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony! Thanks to @razze and the local hackspace crew for organizing 💚

We'll probably have a focus on Flathub, Bazaar, GNOME OS, and related stuff, but any other of the usual topics including mobile, local-first, UX, etc. are of course welcome.

November 28-29

Je sais pas pourquoi l'arrêt des services d'orange et sosh est présenté comme une panne, ils ont prévenu leurs clients par SMS (il y a 2 ou 3 jours) qu'il y aurait une coupure temporaire ce mercredi 🤔

My understanding of the #PHPsecurity issue* is that it exploits uploads -- but if your site doesn't allow public uploads (and you trust all the users who have that ability), I think that means you're safe?
