What a time to be a sysadmin.

If the goal is making stuff then that’s different
due to a critical security advisory about the PHP language (which we depend on), many Wikimedia services are going to be affected. We are hoping to avoid downtime to the wikis, but some supporting tools and services are unfortunately going to be impacted. This is a complex operation on short notice and we are still figuring out the details
so it begins

I wish modern designers discovered at least one more shape besides a rounded rectangle. I am so tired of these pills everywhere

@gdr I am suggesting this is currently a solution for you and me, but not for my Mom. I am also suggesting that the way things are going with age verification ideas such devices might at some point not be able to run stuff you might need to even access fedi. The device will work, but it will not give you access to services you might want to use, rendering it useless.
@rysiek well, yes, and should we just give up because of this?

On October 20, 2026, reports revealed that Elon Musk personally ordered the slowdown of a military-grade version of SpaceX's Starlink satellite service—known as Starshield—that Ukraine's military heavily relies upon. The WSJ detailed that Musk did this without consulting the White House. 🤬

I forced a re-transcode on that AUX0020 video, and that now also plays in snac (no preview thumbnail still though, but that's the same for all videos).

I've reverted the "fix", as it's giving me more problems with other videos (they only play audio).
By re-transcoding, I guess that the post now includes a mpegURL link type, and your snac correctly shows it.
I'll keep trying.

🌍 At #FIFAfrica26, APC members and partners reflected on feminist digital rights: from responses to technology-facilitated gender-based violence to women’s participation in digital governance.
The common thread? Research, policy and community-based support must work together.

When are you supposed to grow up? Does it happen naturally or do you have to work at it, like dance?
if it helps clear things up, I can't dance either . . .

It’s almost like the software that powers the internet was designed for a different time and is only still used because there’s monied interest in keeping it around. We need GNUnet.

I have my blog address (which goes to my home server) in my Mastodon profile, and every time I post on Masto, my server gets a request from every Mastodon site that federates with my instance - i.e. hundreds of requests. It’s no problem for my server, because my blog is a static site, but for anything that dynamically generates every single page impression (like worpress or joomla), it could be a problem. Caching settings might help, I suppose.
Truth is, though, I get far more traffic from vulnerability scanners and AI crawlers that don’t honour robots.txt (or aren’t yet listed).
