Fediverse
So we need people to just mass post links to bad websites, is what you’re saying.
Planning to get certified? You can get CKS and KCSA for 40% less and 35% off most other Linux Foundation certifications. Offer ends October 23.
jfc... some people upset about the new design really feel the need to attack someone entirely unrelated to it? like I know reading comprehension on the Internet and all but damn seeing all these awful takes from people with trans flags in their bios makes me really sad.

Fediverse
TIL the fediverse basically DDOS's sites when you share a link.
I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.
I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.
This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.

I'm in Borås today. I'll blab after lunch. Brought stickers.
skit att jag inte är hemma, hade ju gått!
"I keep coming back to this graph because it’s so eye-popping, almost impossible to believe. As you see in the legend, the blue line is data centers. The grey line is everything else. Everything else. Commercial properties. Rental properties. Single family homes. Multiple family homes. Pick your preferred flavor of development, NIMBY, YIMBY, urban, rural, it’s in there. You basically have rapid data center growth and everything else contracting."
@jalefkowit From the article conclusion : "The simple reality we see here is that a tiny number of people — dozens at most, mostly in Silicon Valley — are able to drive the direction of the whole economy and in a way that at least in the short-term (the long term probably too, but I’m just talking about what we factually observe right now) is straining everyone else."
In other words, the US economy has been hijacked by a small clique with the power of words alone.

The day started with a major Google Cloud outage in Europe, proceeded swiftly to the eMudhra root cert dumpsterfuck, and now the critical PHP vulns are starting to hit.
Cool, cool.

"A tiny piece of plastic. A lifeline.
It weighs less than a gram and costs €11. You probably have one in your phone and never think about it.
But for someone locked inside the Lyubimets Detention Center in Bulgaria, a SIM card is everything. It is a mother’s voice after weeks of silence, a way to tell your children you’re alive, a lawyer’s number, a reminder that the world outside still exists, and that you still exist in it.
It is also a way to be heard. With a SIM card, people can tell us what happens behind those walls.
What happens behind the walls?
Lyubimets lies about 30 km from the Turkish border. Hundreds of people are held there, often for months. Bulgarian law allows up to 18 months of detention for people arriving without “the right” documents, and under the new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, in force since June 2026, detention is becoming routine. The EU funds it, and its flag hangs beside the heavy gates.
People tell us about verbal abuse from guards, a lack of clean drinking water, and no access to toilets at night. We have witnessed medical neglect, including a diabetic person denied their medicine. There are no activities and no psychological support, only long days of waiting and fear.
And the authorities keep people isolated: phones must have no camera and need a working SIM card. They provide neither.
What we do
No Name Kitchen visits Lyubimets every week, one of very few groups that do. We bring clothes, food and hygiene items, document testimonies, and try to bring some warmth into this cold place.
And we bring SIM cards. We hand out dozens every month, but our funds can’t keep up for much longer.
€11 = one SIM card. One person no longer alone. A voice the authorities can’t silence.
Donate now, and share this with someone who cares."
