I have my blog address (which goes to my home server) in my Mastodon profile, and every time I post on Masto, my server gets a request from every Mastodon site that federates with my instance - i.e. hundreds of requests. It’s no problem for my server, because my blog is a static site, but for anything that dynamically generates every single page impression (like worpress or joomla), it could be a problem. Caching settings might help, I suppose.
Truth is, though, I get far more traffic from vulnerability scanners and AI crawlers that don’t honour robots.txt (or aren’t yet listed).
@alisynthesis a three-knob delay (no tap tempo or note-division whatevers), an echoplex if one is handy.
@ike_seblon oh yes. Especially a tape style delay that will do decaying loops!
I replied to a recruiter email on Saturday showing interest by scheduling a meet today late evening and I don't know if the thing is still up or not, probably should send another mail
Breaking news, I had an interview. There is a possibility I might be working for an open source product soon
Follow-up: why mobile Linux still makes sense even if AOSP exists
In my previous post, I shared Amos B. Batto’s analysis on whether Linux phones could become a real alternative to Android and iOS.
Many readers replied that AOSP is already open source and Linux-based, so developing traditional mobile Linux is pointless.
In a new article, Batto responds directly to that argument.
He argues that AOSP was designed around surveillance capitalism and deliberately restricts user control. Google also retains significant influence over the project. Traditional mobile Linux, by contrast, is not controlled by a single company and better aligns with software freedom and digital sovereignty.
The practical trade-offs (apps, hardware support, battery, security model) are real. But the long-term case for independence remains strong.
Do you see mobile Linux outside of AOSP as a worthwhile path, or is a hardened AOSP fork like GrapheneOS the better solution?

@Migueldeicaza amazing! It me! I’m definitely trying this out with my daughter.
@jasongregori wooooohooo!
I love hearing furry youtubers talk about how great it is that staff and volunteers for cons do it for the love of the community, not for money.
I hate how my next thoughts are, "they're non-profits because online furries will treat it like a crime if they aren't", and "regrettably, not all staff are around for anything more than personal gain".
@david
I enjoy folk thinking that non-profit means they can't be evil in some fashion or be making money off of it, and that non non-profits means nothing can go to charity.
While non-profit does have perks, there's some major drawbacks like only being able to have a small amount of money saved for future endevours. I'd love to see some other business structures be used and see what we can actually do with conventions.

It is, but that’s what defederation is for: If there are instances that are being sketchy, they are supposed to get cut off from the rest of the Fediverse.

Yeah, thats how it should be: one download, everyone else downloads from that server, not the original source.
Seems abusable though

Is there a reason why the publishing instance is not downloading the preview image, and then submits it with the post to the other instances? This way they would not have to fetch it themselves.

I'm all for AI, personally. When using it as a programmer it's a huge force multiplier, just pay attention to what it's doing.

AI is a tool. Garbage in, garbage out still applies.

I love Sesame Street, I really do. But maybe it's not the place to learn crypto.

Similar, except those are caused by users visiting a link, whereas the Fediverse issue is federated servers gathering info before users even see a link.
