There are two proposed solutions I have seen. I do not claim that this is exhaustive, just only limited to the proposals that I have stumbled across.
The idea that mastodon has is to have a third-party service that does something like generate a link preview once and then share that to fediverse instances that need it. They have a whole spec they wrote up about these kinds of services that can be run to help out fediverse instances with different things like this, search, or discoverability. They call these FASPs - the repo with the spec is here.
I don’t yet know of any FASP that is live and running, so it is kind of a paper spec at the moment. I don’t do too much on the microblogging side of the fediverse though, so I very well could be wrong.
This comes from an issue on PieFed’s repo. It is basically just an idea at this point, but it is a pretty basic one; have the originating instance fetch the link preview information and simply federate it out alongside the post itself.

That second solution is what I thought of as doing as I read this. It doesn’t rely on a third party service being up. And that instance has to do that work anyway. So why not just share the results with others?

Yeah ok, that's one way to be faster than a GC. Just don't bother deallocating at all
@lambdageek a thing I've noticed is this strategy actually *can* fail if it turns out your OS's VM page allocator is not fast or at some point stops being fast
@fluffy @JulieSqveakaroo @Hearth I think it was close by on the schedule, yeah. I think the show was basically sensible except for making a character of The Dungeon Master. The DM is kind of the distinctive feature between a D&D session and just doing Kinda Tolkien fantasy though.
@Austin_Dern @JulieSqveakaroo @Hearth would you say it was a token Tolkien?

@ben @cagraphics exactly.
Technically you can run a steam engine on wood (which still means it'll require a foresting industry) but to make it efficient in an industrial application, fossil fuels are required.
And modern natural gas power plants are also steam generators. Running those on wood would be extremely difficult.
The idea of wood-fired power plants reminds me of this: there was talk of using chicken droppings to help fuel a power plant, though we've recently decided not to - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ce85dq9qvvlo

TIL the fediverse basically DDOS's sites when you share a link.
I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.
I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.
This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.

THE LATEST NEWS AT THIS HOUR:
THE U.S. ADMINISTRATION WITHHOLDS PATRIOT MISSILES FOR UKRAINE:
Washington has delayed the transfer of Patriot #interceptor #missiles, a move that coincided with President Trump’s turn to Russia in recent days, The Washington Post reports.
@serge I do not read anyone dismissing the awful thing of a synagogue being ransacked. I stated property is indeed being trashed, by some looters.
TBC my post (& concern) pertains to the extreme police violence, against brown kids esp, in light of the rising racism in France, something also close to home given my French extended family whom are of non-white heritage, a racism playing out in coverage of the protests as they work ceaselessly to make brown people 'the problem'.
It's about them.
There are a lot of false reports being made by the right-wing press, including some made by AI (like the images of a old couple being stripped naked).
No idea if this "hidden synagogue ransack" is part of them (I did not see this information on respectable news).

@nolan personally I think both agentic AI *and* web components are a blight on the software industry. I also have a lot of grumpy curmudgeon opinions about React.
@nolan I feel like the fact that this page fails to render anything useful on my web browser sums it up better than anything I could write myself. https://www.webcomponents.org/introduction
