Fediverse
TIL the fediverse basically DDOS's sites when you share a link.
I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.
I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.
This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.
@grumpybozo I am literally on the Canadian public transit going to the doctor right now. I am typing this on my phone on a streetcar.
@grumpybozo the thing about Canada is you can see a doctor but that does not mean you can see a doctor the same day

20th of Owltober!
Lethargic and deeply bruised on admission, this owl quickly rebounded thanks to MARS Wildlife Rescue. "Her spiciness was revealed as she recovered--she became very angry and grabby!" To donate to MARS: https://marswildliferescue.com/donate Source: https://fb.com/1390476693112325 #owlsintowels 💛🦉

Oh my word the "flying car" Tesla Roadster buyers' remorse is going to be even funnier than the CyberTruck saga! 🤣
Kinda can't wait tbh.
Though I'd expect the economy to crash long before any of those are actually delivered.

superman’s heat vision is the ability to heat up things he’s looking at, that’s…not something we do, right?
@jepyang we emit IR from our eyes (ok and everywhere else) so sort of technically relatively we do.

@estelle The only violence in France that concerns me is the violence being committed by the state against the citizens who tolerate the state's continued existence.
