Playing around with the Home Assistant Voice (Preview Edition), it's fascinating how well it works out of the box.
But what's even more fascinating: This is "just" an ESPHome device. With a 70k YAML config, but still! You can see it here:
https://github.com/esphome/home-assistant-voice-pe/blob/dev/home-assistant-voice.yaml
It has several features that I didn't even know were in ESPHome:
Animations for LED strips
https://esphome.io/components/light/#strip-animations
Wake word recognition
https://esphome.io/components/micro_wake_word/
Programmatic OTA
https://esphome.io/components/ota/http_request/
@scy 70k lines of yaml does feel like a crime against humanity though.

Refusing accessibility contributions and telling experts to no longer help your product is low even for Mullenweg.
@Nux not the majority, but at EuroBSDCon there are younger (< 30 years old) young people. But you need to travel, pay for your ticket. I'm not sure I could afford that in my 20ies. But some of them make it, and the foundations are giving some funds to help them to contribute and reach the conferences.
@stefano Hi Stefano, do you mind sharing the links to the announcement you've referred to? Thanks 😁
@graves I've read this, and other recent interviews: https://lwn.net/SubscriberLink/1099594/be20382b54a9b4cd/
While I can understand some of the technical points (hey, Linux is powering the world!), this is somehow...sad.
“The tesla car had 3G”
Well my iphone 14 has 5G
@stefano I partly agree with your feelings.
On the other hand, once a project gains a "critical mass", sure you don't want to break it by flooding the gates with low-quality contributions either.
Back then was Linux still small and more an hobby project that a real production one. But once the TOP500 has been made only by servers running Linux, you know it's not a pet project anymore but it is "serious", while the stakes are bigger and for sure there are player pouring money into it.
@madduci That's the point. It's now following the needs of the Top500 - not of the common people.

Channels are evolving ✨
As our Foundation focuses our efforts to grow the Social Web in new areas, our 62-topical Channels will be phasing out to be replaced by tags.pub.
We encourage all Channel users to join the tags.pub project by opting in and sharing with hashtags. For more details on how to use tags.pub, please check out: https://tags.pub/
Please share this message so all Channel users are aware and so that we can continue growing discovery on the Social Web.
I've found some Germany based. But when I search for events in Germany or a region on any instance, nothing comes up. Not even the ones listed on the instance itself, as soon as I set the filter to a region or to Germany. I tried this on some instances, and it doesn't work.
@moeria @perspektivbrocken @junior42
Instance administrators mutually decide which other instance they follow.
You won't find concerts in Germany if you're looking at an instance advertising for cycling events in Paris (this is a bit extreme but you get the idea).
It's a shame there is no general purpose instance in germany.
Not only it could federate existing gancio and mobilizon instances: it would offer an alternative to Facebook group and events to all the citizens.
Go #fediverse #germany!
Nothing new, but I'm disappointed.
Many years ago, Linux represented the alternative. The question was: "Why don't you just use Windows? It's easier." And the answer was, almost always: "To be free."
The "bazaar" spirit of Linux and its distributions made us feel free. Personally, I've always thought that the "cathedral" approach of the BSDs produces more reliable and maintainable results. But that feeling of freedom was fantastic.
There wasn't a company deciding everything. There was a kernel developed by people following what they believed was right. Or what the community, in one way or another, was asking for.
Torvalds has always been quite outspoken (remember the middle finger to Nvidia?). But the general spirit was, again, freedom. Anyone, sitting in their bedroom, could contribute in some way. Even me.
Today, after the embrace of AI, I read statements about wanting only "serious" contributors, "serious" contributions, because the world depends on this code and reliability must come first.
I understand the problem. Maintaining the Linux kernel is a huge responsibility. And low-quality contributions, especially those blindly generated with AI, are a real problem.
But what I hear, between the lines, is something like: "Hey, kid in your bedroom. If you don't have the right tools, the money to afford them, or the experience we expect, maybe your contribution isn't even worth considering."
Am I exaggerating? Maybe. But this is what I got from the tone and content of the latest public statements.
And it makes me sad.
Because it feels like a transformation towards what we wanted to escape, back then.
So please don't ask me why the BSD community, imperfect as it is, feels like home to me.
When I see young people, with limited resources, being able to contribute and attend conferences (thanks to the support of the Foundations), and I see the enthusiasm in their eyes, I feel at home.
Because I still remember what it meant to be that kid in a bedroom.
And I really hope we never close the door in their face.
@pixelfed @jumpingpants @tctdiy_gaming the same repository as the old version? Asking because of a bug I found.

I hate how AI has become like Covid 5 years ago. Those that argue about it all the time are naturally split into two camps that can be best described as "the retarded" and "the more retarded", just like the two vaccine camps of yesteryears ("you should get your 6th shot and better not go out without a mask" vs. "You are cattle if you got the vaxxx").
I wish everyone doing this could just shut up about it and return to the "I don't care what you are doing with your life" attitude. I know I'm sometimes guilty of this discourse, but at least I try to keep it to the minimum when this stuff enters my feeds.
@phnt This time there are 3 camps: believers, doomers and deniers.
