Discussion
These are the people building the Fediverse!
I was going to switch focus and start preparing the new Pixelfed webUI for release, but after getting some feedback on our new app, I think I should spend one more week implementing community feedback and getting it even more polished first!
So I ask you, what would you like me to focus on:
Don’t look back in anger
Sometimes life is hard and we have to overcome nerve-racking situations. But never look back in anger, you will find some light even behind you.
Pixelfed for Android (v2.0.1) community: We're working on an update and want your feedback on what you'd like to see improved!
We're moving the compose button to the bottom nav menu, so everything besides that, please leave a comment, and boost for more visibility.
@dansup Thank you, I didn't try that because it said access to camera...maybe you could add 'and access to gallery' just to make it extra clear (or it's just me)
@borisentiu Ah okay, we will improve that, and just so you know, we only upload media you actually submit after entering the caption, we do not upload anything until you get to that point.
LOL “A business model which is so successful, by the way, that my tiny one-man company made infinitely more profit last month than OpenAI ever has. If you’re confused by that look up division by zero.” new post from @rysiek https://rys.io/en/184.html
Media helped create the crisis it finds itself in
@evan I like these progress trackers you're doing. 👍️
Just sent a PR on the non-ASCII handle one for Fedipub and Manyfold.
@borisentiu go to the Home Screen and it’s the top left camera button! We will move it to the bottom nav in the next update!

Also, I think this may prevent our app from being included in the official F-Droid repo, but we have our own repo with Push Notifications and Maps (for Places).
I wrote a custom Expo module for the Google MLKit translation feature.
The Pixelfed translate feature uses the same models as Google Translate, but I want to stress that it's entirely handled on-device, no text/data gets transmitted to any remote server (see the docs linked below for proof).
I will open source this and a few other custom modules I wrote for Pixelfed later this year ❤️
Pixelfed supports on-demand and on-device translation for 59 languages!
You may see a translate button under captions and comments, and it will download the model if its not present (30MB) and cache both the model and translated text for faster translations.
No data leaves your device ✨
You can manage downloaded languages in Settings -> Content Preferences -> Manage Translations.
Available now!
@dansup yeah Apple are sticklers for a block feature.
When I worked on Workplace (Meta’s sadly defunct enterprise comms platform) they suddenly rejected us for that. I was the only engineer on the team in the US at the time, so I had to do a call with Apple to work through it. Our issue was, people _shouldn’t_ be able to block colleagues on a work platform, that’s an HR issue!
I negotiated us 90 days grace for app updates, and let our PMs figure out what to do :)
@amyworrall Oh dang, yeah I can see the reasoning behind not needing a block feature for that type of app.
We do luckily support it in Pixelfed, and it is only a tap away on posts in feeds and on profiles, but they still wanted a screen recording lol

I found a clever and efficient way to handle translations offline, with 59 supported languages and built in language detection.
We also cache translated text using Tanstack Query, and use your device language to check only visible captions to see if we show the translation button.
The first time you press the button, we download a small translation model (30MB) and perform the translation, caching the model for future use.
Short text, mentions and links are ignored.
On-device translations with 59 supported languages, are coming to the new Pixelfed app for both Android and iOS!
No data leaves your device, language recognition and translation happens on your device.
Relaxing my mind #loops
