These are the people building the Fediverse!
Writing shit in rust has gotten a lot easier now that you can basically just say:
> Hey I need some rust tokio warp bullshit to serve some json out of a postgres (schema is below), please help me, borrow checker be like YOU SHALL NOT PASS 😭
@cjd ah yes, the DHH method!
Looks like the creator of Laravel is teasing a Rust version of the Laravel framework.
The Rewrite it in Rust meme is still alive.
Open Source is freedom.
Open Source is sharing.
Open Source is being free from obligations.
It's making your own kind of music.
That Open Source must use GitHub is blasphemy.
That those who do Open Source must use specific tools or solutions is an abomination.
And when that tool belongs to a company, it's just another form of embrace, extend, extinguish.
Open Source is a license, a free one, that protects the software and/or the people.
Everything else is corporate in disguise.
Or they'd just add some noise as a semi-transparent overlay. Or some OSD text, also as a semi-transparent overlay.
But that's not how this stuff works! At least do it to luminance and chrominance separately to have any chance of it looking realistic.
OSD text should never have anything visible behind it. No real AV device ever does that. It's usually just black or white. Sometimes the surrounding colors can leak into it, but that's it.
And of course, if you're adding noise, it should also affect the sync, so the lines themselves should also jitter a bit.
One cursed thing after having messed with analog video too much is that I now see how unrealistic all those "VHS" effects are that some youtubers love so much.
For example, they'd just overlay some horizontal stripes of noise on the image to show "fast forward". But, when fast forwarding a real tape, you don't quite see that — you actually see parts of several adjacent frames at once, separated by those stripes of noise, as the video head swipes across them.

I'm guessing that ICE is going to start quoting the Hounds of Zaroff and treating Zaroff as the hero any day now
Meanwhile offering up LA and San Diego is, uh, well I guess one way you can test the "all enemies foreign or domestic" clause.
Of course the cowards of the Republican Party of California refused to comment.
Fascists gonna fascist.

@cheeaun I was seeing nothing happening when trying to attach media in Firefox on Android, but seems fixed now
@aburka oh, didn't know it affects Firefox Android too, glad it's fixed! 🙇♂️

🐛 Another version with a bug fix just released https://github.com/cheeaun/phanpy/releases/tag/2026.10.06.bb8c326
Possibly affecting users on iOS 26.5/27 onwards; attaching media via the menu in composer wasn't working (attaching via button works).

General interest mega-boards and forum sustainability
@julian Still interested in this feature. Was the idea dropped?
General interest mega-boards and forum sustainability
@bh4-tech no, not at all. It's actually going to be our next focus of work for NodeBB, with funding from NLNet
@julian I have with mbin and Mastodon always approval required by administrator enabled. Before a new account can be used.
And I also enable that login is required to see the content.
Today we have so many spam it's not just Ai agents. And logging is is required to avoid scraping by all the (Ai) bots.
Should post/registration queue be enabled by default?
@melroy@mastodon.melroy.org I think spam is one thing... forums have always dealt with spam, and it didn't necessarily mean closing off registrations or queuing posts. There was always an argument to be made that it added friction on sign-up, which is a legitimate concern.
However, the prospect of waking up to find your board overridden with AI agents working in concert is... unsettling at best. This is why I ask now.
Je pense à lui (le ReadyVerse)
@mikesplaces looking into it now 🙇♂️
Should post/registration queue be enabled by default?
Should post queue be enabled by default?
OpenAI “rogue” agent activities found on Wikimedia projects
Any online services (NodeBB included) with open registration is at risk of being taken over by so called "rogue agents".
So the question is:
Should post/registration queue be enabled by default?
My 0.02:
Messaging platforms should ship as closed as possible by default and allow the operator to open up as desired.
We don't need to limit humans registering and posting, we need to monitor rate limit excesses, abnormal/inauthentic activity and limit /that/.
Spam will never end, taking an 80/20 approach may not work so well going forward if the 20 is billions of posts, but all platforms need to find ways to mitigate the never-before-seen levels of spam we know are coming.

@greg The part you left out is kind of important there.
want to know what cool updates have been happening to fediverse software in the last 3 months? I've got you covered!
@laurenshof very informative summary as always, and thanks for covering NeoDB.
we have a few more highlights from this past summer: a major UI redesign, personalized recommendation, ATProto sync with bridge.neodb.net, better ActivityPub support including view and post Article, many new clients incl a KOReader plugin and a few web/mobile apps https://neodb.net/apps/
If you haven't been using NeoDB for a while, i'd love to welcome you back for another look and get your feedback!

We used ChatGPT (GPT4o model [7]) to facilitate the writing of this manuscript. The usage included:
* Turn CSV format tables into LaTeX format tables.
* Look for and correct grammar errors
* Polish existing writing done by authors using prompts such as "Find a synonym for X", "Add transition words to this sentence," and "Shorten this sentence without altering its meaning."
We did not use ChatGPT to write original text in the paper at hand.](https://media.hachyderm.io/media_attachments/files/117/391/208/978/535/080/original/3dd24762e71094d4.jpeg)
