Should post queue be enabled by default?
OpenAI “rogue” agent activities found on Wikimedia projects
Any online services (NodeBB included) with open registration is at risk of being taken over by so called "rogue agents".
So the question is:
Should post/registration queue be enabled by default?
@julian I have with mbin and Mastodon always approval required by administrator enabled. Before a new account can be used.
And I also enable that login is required to see the content.
Today we have so many spam it's not just Ai agents. And logging is is required to avoid scraping by all the (Ai) bots.

@melroy@mastodon.melroy.org I think spam is one thing... forums have always dealt with spam, and it didn't necessarily mean closing off registrations or queuing posts. There was always an argument to be made that it added friction on sign-up, which is a legitimate concern.
However, the prospect of waking up to find your board overridden with AI agents working in concert is... unsettling at best. This is why I ask now.
@julian @melroy I think one question is: is there a something we can introduce that makes it harder for bots to use, but doesn't introduce too much friction for actual people.
That used to just be captchas, that obviously doesn't seem to be enough anymore.
But Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/etc. are all low-friction sign-ups and if we want reasonable alternatives to those I don't think we can expect the average person to jump through a bunch of hoops just to try a service

My 0.02:
Messaging platforms should ship as closed as possible by default and allow the operator to open up as desired.
We don't need to limit humans registering and posting, we need to monitor rate limit excesses, abnormal/inauthentic activity and limit /that/.
Spam will never end, taking an 80/20 approach may not work so well going forward if the 20 is billions of posts, but all platforms need to find ways to mitigate the never-before-seen levels of spam we know are coming.
