In that case, spineless Democrats would be in a position to collaborate with the administration, passing joint legislation and preserving Trump's agencies and policies into the future.

Instead, by elevating white nationalist Stephen Miller to White House Chief of Staff, Trump is doubling down on a combative strategy, setting the stage for an open conflict between his administration and the rest of society.

This is probably for the best.

But it will be up to us to mobilize grassroots resistance, rather than imagining that politicians will defend our communities for us.
