I do not want the firehose of ads, rage baits, and disinformation that comes with commercial social media.
It's strange to me that people who laugh at me because I'm not there do not understand that.
I feel sad they might never know the calming and deeply nourishing spaces they are missing on alternative networks.

I recall getting suckered into using FB when it first launched. It worked, it wasn't full of ads and slop, and it was fun reconnecting with old friends. Ah, the old days, when many people considered Chrome as the best alternative to Internet Explorer!

I joined because when I didn't get on myspace a "friend" made an account, on my behalf, and started posting a bunch on embarrassingly stupid posts. So I joined every new socail media site (so many sites) on the off chance that they would take off. I hated FB nearly the whole time.

Writing from the couch next to my spouse scrolling on Facebook, which pauses videos midstream to play ads, not to mention the endless supply of slop and bait.
I remember the dopamine hit of finding long-lost friends on FB, G+, Orkut, etc... but the vibe quickly soured. I'm content with my fedi conversations and in-person friends.
