@Nmyownworld
Ok, I saw this and thought “this is more vague than Picard on the bridge, Nimmy will love it”
And you just get it straight off… HOW? 😂
@startrekgifs
@gareth @startrekgifs That brief glimpse at the beginning of that unforgettable character. He, and the episode he was in, are very ... distinct. 🤨 😄
@Nmyownworld @gareth @startrekgifs
sometimes my phone clips off one or two seconds of a GIF. Often it's a vital bit, like here! 😂
@5ciFiGirl
Yeah, guess I have that too… all I see is the Enterprise flying through space, nothing else!
@Nmyownworld @5ciFiGirl @startrekgifs
👍
But @gareth is on the same instance, so that's not the culprit.
Good job at any rate.
@darth_hideout Thanks!
And good point about the Gareth and I being on the same instance. Maybe it's a phone compared to a computer thing? I'm on a computer. 🤔
@Nmyownworld @5ciFiGirl @startrekgifs @gareth
I have to go to desktop to save. Same both places (usu phone).
@darth_hideout @5ciFiGirl @startrekgifs @gareth
Okay, y'all are far more tech knowledgeable than I am. Here's what happened:
When I saved it as an mp4, I only got about 5 or 6 seconds of the Enterprise moving through space. Like what you've seen.
But, that doesn't explain why I can see the full gif here, and see it if I open it as an mp4 in another tab.
@Nmyownworld @5ciFiGirl @startrekgifs @gareth
Actually same for me with the original on friendsofdesoto.
I have a suspicion that perhaps the original instance at some point clipped this down. (I suspect it's the middle, not the end.)
You saw it early & have a cached version on your computer. When you save directly, it ignores that cache & goes to the server, which has now trimmed it.
But idk for sure.
https://friendsofdesoto.social/@startrekgifs/117574950169383863
@darth_hideout Bingo! Without the cache from earlier, I'm getting the 6 second snippet that only shows the Enterprise flying through space.
Mystery solved. 🏆
I was looking at my Notifications when that gif popped up, so I did open it within a few seconds of it being posted. I must have beat the gif being clipped.
@Nmyownworld @5ciFiGirl @startrekgifs @gareth
I was speculating, but it would make sense. Gareth prob saw it just a second or so after, while you were typing or something, before your reply showed up.
I guess the early bird gets the worm, so it's not a giant bug.
DF has said he actually uploads video, which then shows up in the browser as a GIF. I think sometimes I see GIFs converting in the UI when they're fresh (not just the Star Trek GIFs). So maybe something is happening on the server. Weird, but solved, as you say.
@darth_hideout
Not that it helps, but I didn’t see it for seven hours after Nimmy got it.
I’m way behind on the timeline, as usual these days 😕
Interesting that the server takes a video, converts it to a gif but then arbitrarily trims it though. Something to remember if I ever start uploading videos myself

Some more info. Feel free to mute the convo. This is probably most interesting to @deusfigendi.
I see something in the API response for that post.

The duration field is weird. It's the right length, but why PT? Why capital S? Why an S at all or a string & not a double?
Here's the API doc link: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/methods/statuses/#get
I see nothing at all about a duration parameter. Is this maybe an error somewhere along the way? Is this forcing it to clip down to that duration?
@gareth @Nmyownworld @5ciFiGirl @startrekgifs @deusfigendi
Idk. I just uploaded a GIF on my phone. Same thing in the API response here. In this case, PT1.8S.
When @startrekgifs uploads the clip it sets a mime type and an alt text. The duration and dimensions are detected by the server.
mostly it uploads mp4 files with the mime type video/gifv. Under circumstances it also uploads video/webm image/webp or image/gif
@darth_hideout @startrekgifs @gareth @Nmyownworld @5ciFiGirl
It's been a while when I recognized the server usually converts gifs into gifv (H264-mp4 without audio, played in a loop).
So I thought it's useless to cut clips out of mp4 files convert them with huge effort into shitty gif files just to have the server convert it back.
So I started to use more mp4/gifv which OFTEN allows me not to convert and re-encode the clip. (I could imagine this could also lead to frame-lost).
in rare cases I use .mkv but because those made some trouble I usually convert them into mp4
or gif… but most likely only the static text boards
or webm for very few source videos.
@deusfigendi @startrekgifs @gareth @Nmyownworld @5ciFiGirl
Thanks for the info. Obviously, I don't really know what happened earlier, but it seems like more than half the gif got lost somewhere along the way. I don't think it matters much to us playing the game, just weird.
@darth_hideout @deusfigendi @startrekgifs @gareth @Nmyownworld
Just confirming that I have the same thing as described by all of you. 6 seconds on my phone, but on computer it's 14 seconds. but 6 if I download it.
I have seen this happen before:
On my phone, I used to just use a browser. Sometimes I saw a gif I couldn't identify, but later on my computer I noticed it was longer. I looked back at my phone, it was still short. Even viewed on original server.
Now I use tusky on my phone, and it's the same thing. For this GIF it's the 6 seconds. I can't "view original server" using tusky, but I can view from my 3 separate accounts. all same.
But when I go to my computer, it's the 14 seconds. Even though I looked at it later. I do keep a tab open on my computer, so maybe it already loaded? But it's still 14 sec even if I open original server in a private window.🤔
So I still don't know how the computer is getting the full version.
But like I said I have noticed this before. so it's not an isolated incident.
