The Machars of Galloway in winter, when the trees are bare and the fields empty, takes on an air of something ancient slumbering.

@peterbrown @DarkGalloway the only thing that's in Dumfries AND Galloway is the A75 road. Everything else is in Dumfries OR Galloway (or neither).
It is one of the most meaningless of the confections of the last Scottish Local Government "Reform", which the next "Reform" will undoubtedly make far worse.
@simon_brooke @DarkGalloway all based on a false premise that local authorities have all to be the same size.
Which gave us Highland region.
I do think any further reform of the local authority can’t be any worse. Most European countries have much smaller local authorities, which brings them much closer to the communities they serve.
We could actually do a lot worse than go back to many of the old counties, which had developed for a reason.
Clackmannan would be small- so what?
@simon_brooke @DarkGalloway small counties like Clackmannan would undoubtedly look to their neighbours to share things like fire, health and ambulance services to make them viable, but they themselves would choose which area to partner with.
This already happened until recently with Lothian and Borders.
@DarkGalloway what a pleasure to hear a reference to Galloway and not the ubiquitous “Dumfries and Galloway”, which is meaningless and unhelpful.
