I feel like an underrated first step towards becoming a more liberated person is to learn to let go of being defensive about all the ways in which you personally are still capitulating to the system. We all have ways in which we do that – driving cars, eating processed food, even choices of which stores we shop at sometimes – because the way the world is set up makes it incredibly difficult not to. But if you continue to make excuses in the face of criticism of those things, you will never develop the space to begin considering ways in which you could let go of them, or even at least change your relationship to them.
Even if you can't change those things *right now,* it's still better to add to the work of dreaming of ways that the world might become better than to cling to the "impossible" ways you imagine it can't. And I would say that for *many* of these things, "impossible" is actually an illusion intended to keep us all crushed under the weight of a system that's killing us.
