oh I do love a good solid heist
@jenniferplusplus @munin It does sound a little too good to be true, especially that the theft wasn't reported for days. IME, any legitimate freight company runs a tight enough ship that there's no legitimate excuse for that.
@jenniferplusplus @munin if I was a thief, I would absolutely steal a truckload of NVIDIA hardware. And then I'd use it for scientific computing because that's what being gay and doing crime is ACTUALLY about.
@aud @munin Except that anyone who has the operational capability to actually power these up already has more of them than they can use.
Like, maybe there's a market for them in cryptomines, but then I would have guessed that the price of electricity is too high and the price of bitcoin is too low to make even nearly free GPUs that attractive right now
@jenniferplusplus @munin yeah; my joking aside, that's a pretty fair point. So maybe it's just about fencing/laundering them into the market for dodgy resellers on digital marketplaces?
That would assume low supply, which, is maybe true? I've stopped keeping up with the supply of GPUs and other parts because it just doesn't matter to me when the items cost 2 grand or whatever (plus, if these are datacenter stock, which they almost certainly are, it's more like, I dunno, 11 grand). Even if it's available...
@munin interesting that there seems to be a viable black market for these things
I wouldn't have thought there would be. Part of me wonders if this is actually insurance fraud
