Motorola has announced their new high end flagship phone including upcoming official support for GrapheneOS as an OS option.
Motorola Signature 27 will be the first Motorola device supported by GrapheneOS. More devices will be supported in the future.
@thesoundoftruth That's not about GrapheneOS but rather the regular Motorola OS with Google Mobile Services. GrapheneOS doesn't have any agentic AI included. People can install apps for that if they want it.
We have no plan to provide any of our own agentic AI features. We think it belongs in apps installed by users rather than the OS. We do want hardware acceleration to work to encourage avoiding privacy invasive cloud AI services but it's a mobile phone, not a huge server with 1TB of VRAM.

@GrapheneOS The price and "next-generation agentic AI" would kill it for me.
@MyricaGale There will be more supported devices at lower price points once those meet our requirements. Snapdragon currently only provides SoC for the flagship SoC.
Most of what's in the post is about the standard Motorola OS with Google Mobile Services and has nothing to do with GrapheneOS. There's not going to be any cloud AI included in GrapheneOS. People can use apps for that if they want it and we aren't going to provide it ourselves.

@GrapheneOS Someone asked if you get a cut of the phone price. I'm interested to know as well as that does help justify the price for me. There is something to be said about leaving the house in 2026, in Airplane mode with my tunes going, hopping in the car, bluetoothing my tunes over, cruising wherever with offline GPS and literally not even realizing I'm still disconnected.
Graphene, and self-hosting in general, feels so amazing, like the cord has been cut. Love ya, Graphene Team!

@GrapheneOS last time a kind-of open source Android community joint with brand was one plus collaborate with CyanogenMod, which was also a Chinese capital disguise as US company.
Hope you learn the history well and collaborate better with Motorola.
@felix196 It's a non-exclusive partnership and we can partner with other OEMs too. We'll continue supporting Pixels and it's going to be the same GrapheneOS with the same features across both. The differences will be hardware capability related. For example, we can support installing and using the Motorola camera app similarly to how we support installing and using the Pixel camera app.
Motorola Mobility is not disguised as a US company. It's a US company which Lenovo purchased in 2014.

@s0x41 A used Pixel 8a is the existing budget option. There will be support for cheaper Motorola devices but it will take time for those to meet our requirements. There will be gradual steps down the price ladder as the devices start meeting our requirements. It has to start at the high end where MTE, a secure element and good long term updates are available. It will expand down from there as that trickles down.
@GrapheneOS how it's the activation of Graphene OS?
@GrapheneOS @jjj I was so excited to try this and then bring SandFly support to Graphine OS, but it's far too expensive. Unfortunate, but not unexpected for a flagship.
@GrapheneOS do you know if this will result in these devices being "verified" for things like Google wallet tap to pay?
@tarajdactyl GrapheneOS can't be certified by Google so it won't be approved by the Play Integrity API. That means Google Pay still won't permit using it. However, there are multiple tap-to-pay options available for GrapheneOS in the European Economic Area and UK including Curve Pay. You don't need Google Pay for tap-to-pay in most of Europe. If you aren't in the EEA or UK then a common alternative is using a Garmin watch for Garmin Pay or an Android Wear watch such as a Pixel or Galaxy watch.

@kevinrns @tarajdactyl We listed out the options such as Curve Pay and other alternatives in Europe or using a smartwatch for Garmin Pay or Google Pay. There's also the option to tap a credit/debit card directly as long as that's supported by the card. None of these options provides good privacy. All of those services have both corporate and government surveillance. Cash is the main private option or using private cryptocurrencies such as Monero but few stores take that.
@GrapheneOS damn, that makes sense, and was what i had feared; had hoped that this would change the calculus somehow if Motorola had any sway (but of course Google doesn't want to support an alternative OS)

@tarajdactyl It should become much easier to convince apps to stop using the Play Integrity API or at least to stop banning GrapheneOS by permitting the verified boot key fingerprints if they won't stop. Apps won't be able to dismiss it as only an unofficial alternative OS anymore.
Once there are cheaper Motorola devices meeting our requirements, that will help with expanding our userbase. Our userbase size is a major factor in our ability to convince apps to stop banning using GrapheneOS.
