We are approaching the moment when Canadians can rightfully ask “Hey, why should I pay to be a subscriber to get access to your content?, I’m already paying for your content just by being a taxpayer- Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, National Post”
And:
Is it right for the government to be financially supporting media outlets that push a certain ideological perspective? Should a Conservative voter be happy that his hard-earned money is funding a handful of left-wing “private” media outlets? Should an NDP voter be content that her taxes are funding right-wing outlets?
The feds insist that they are providing “greater stability as the sector adapts to a changing media landscape.” But what’s their end game in terms of when they consider outlets to have “adapted”? Is that when the govt support stops? Why should the government, with no journalism expertise, be trusted to determine our industry’s landscape? And are they themselves contributing to the “instability”?
How many CBCs does the federal government want to ultimately create here?

The slow and steady march of Canada's journalism industry becoming nearly completely subsidized by and reliant on government money continues, ...as the subsidies now spread beyond print to TV and radio newsrooms, following heavy lobbying:
$501 million in spending over five years.
