Australians who have hybrid office/WFH arrangements: How do you do telephony? Work-issued mobile? Work-issued computer with soft phone app? BYOD with a work app? BYOD with your personal number? Don’t do voice telephony? Boosts OK.
@futzle unholy combination of company phones, softphones, teams calling, and various cloud PBX.
Of them all, teams is the worse to setup and manage, but the best user experience (on iOS at least)
@futzle I work from home a couple of days a week.
Work issued laptop, headset and soft phone program.
I do plug into my personal screens and keyboard/mouse at home. In the office they issued screens/keyboard/mouse
@futzle I use my actual phone with a work supplied laptop. However, I may have been instrumental in founding the company, so I mean that probably makes sense.
It doesn’t really matter to me, I’m the one who assigns me work and it’s really hard to avoid me whenever I go past a mirror, and I don’t have the same demands of staff so I think that’s fine.
The real tricky bit is going to be when we get big enough to warrant a security team: They’re going to have to stop me from just having total enmeshed access to everything all the time. Yeah I’m a paranoid security person but it’s still a big attack surface!
@futzle teams is used with handsets disappearing off desks. I only answer calls via my work laptop so good luck trying to contact me out of work hours when it’s turned off! I quietly removed my personal mobile number from any contact lists back in 2020 when WFH arrived in a rush as I quickly worked out people were going to abuse it.
@futzle Teams on work laptop, including integration with a contact center queue for my team
@futzle everything through Teams. We have phone numbers assigned.
Teams on mobile phone or with your PC and a headset.
@futzle @liamvhogan Teams on personal devices.
It's rare that we get cold-called tho. We have a channel dedicated to saying if we are currently working or dropping kids off (etc). And even then it's usually considered polite to send a text message first saying if they are free for a call.
The devs do this, and the rest of the org does not. Some people find it weird or over-sharing, but it kind of makes organising a distributed team much easier.
@futzle Teams video calls have totally replaced voice telephony for us, to the extent that all desk phones are gone now.
@futzle soft-phone app on both work-issued laptop and on my personal phone. And standard voice calls from my mobile to some people.
@futzle haven't had a work phone since circa 2015, all replaced with Teams/Zoom/WebEx.
@futzle I don’t need to make a lot of calls but we can make calls to or receive calls from phone numbers on teams. Usually use my work laptop but I think the teams app on my personal phone would also do it
@joannaholman @futzle The Teams app on your personal phone can certainly be used for work: my work number come through to Teams on my personal phone.
@futzle soft-phone and USB headset on work laptop, and some people got mobile phones supplied as well
@futzle forward my desk phone to my personal mobile. Extensive use of Teams over remote desktop connection.
@futzle no phone as all work stuff is through slack / meets / whatever
