#USPOL what the fuck is"liberal democracy"? Does the term contain the idea, that a democracy that is not "liberal" meaning does not offer "freedom" to capital and it's owners, will not be recognized as democratic? Why do they stick these two words together? I don't get "liberal." It's meaning seems contradictory. the US "liberal democracy " does not come across as especially democratic to me. Is the freedom to exploit, to build monopolies that hijack the state constitute a liberal democracy? Is there a greater contradiction? Does the term "liberal democracy" only exist because those owners of capital have hijacked the press and public discussion a longtime ago? Can someone explain?

@Tamtam “liberal democracy” is a phrase made from two of the most meaning-tortured words in the english language.
the meaning of the phrase therefore is context-specific and - in my mind - undefined.
but i’ve heard it used to describe an approach to governance that grants the government substantial powers to regulate its citizens. that’s the “liberal” part i think.
Contrast “conservative” democracy where governments are expected to stay the fuck out of their citizens’ way, except in very limited circumstances where government intervention is the only path to social benefit.
