ugh I hate how many times this pattern happens:
1. clone repo
2. make a small change
3. try to run code, fails
4. what did I do wrong? time to back out my changes one by one
5. I back them all out
6. this code never worked in the first place

you'd think I'd learn to test the code before making changes
and I did! but I did it in a different repo, and it's the repo, not the code that's broken. It's depending on an upstream package that's been deleted
