I'm having to restrain the urge to get much too excited in someone else's mentions because they're fiddling with Windows Vista, an operating system I have mixed feelings about & that had a massive influence on me in my formative years.
My first experience of Vista was on a cheap but new Toshiba Satellite L20 laptop with Home Basic preinstalled, and it was utterly shit! I rolled the machine back to Windows 😜 and dual-booted with Ubuntu. That was the machine that made me a Linux enthusiast for ~15 years afterwards. 🤣
My second experience of Vista was Home Premium on a silver Sony VAIO with a ludicrously big 17" screen, and believe it or not that actually wasn't a bad experience. Its time was limited though because a year or two after buying it I had access to an MSDN subscription as part of the CompSci degree I'd started, so until I factory restored it for my parents who wanted the laptop when I traded up, it mostly ran a Linux host OS and Windows 7 in a guest VM. 🤓
Most people I grew up with bought a cheap Citroen Saxo or Peugeot 206 and then used their teenaged part-time job wages to install a massive speaker that filled the boot.
I let my step-dad pick out a second-generation Nissan Micra because I was apparently more interested in Japanese laptops. 🤓
This peaked with a jet black custom-built Sony VAIO VPC-EB range laptop that I used 2010-2014. I can tell I liked it because I wouldn't get rid of it until the laptop stand replacing its broken internal fans also broke. I had to use an external mouse because the trackpad was the first thing that broke. 🤣
I didn't learn my lesson about style over substance, because a couple of years later I bought a 2016 model HP Spectre 13. When that inevitably broke itself 18 months later, I picked up a cheap & well-built Dell XPS 13 I could reliably run Linux on. 🐧
I eventually succumbed to the allure of Apple Silicon though, and have done most of my home computing on Macs for the last few years. 🍎
