Well, I've done it.
For a year & a half, my main Mastodon account on ohai.social was an essential part of my daily browsing, even pinned as an Essential tab in my browser (Zen).
But Mastodon 5.0 is just too problematic. I refuse to keep slogging through all the issues it keeps throwing at me.
And I don't mean only things that are simply different from before; I mean things that are objectively bad.
Including but not limited to (more info in Alt Text):
- Notifications that show not even a single word of the post content they're about.🤦♂️
- The always-terrible hashtag autocomplete now also often puts its suggestions right over where I'm trying to type a hashtag, forcing me to 'type blind'!🤦♂️
- Blocking me from posting with a "Post can't be blank" error when the post is not blank.🤦♂️
So today I removed ohai.social from my Essential tabs. I'll still use Mastodon & ohai.social , just not "directly", instead trying out a variety of front-ends (a.k.a. web clients, i.e. other ways to use Mastodon in a web browser), learning the pros & cons of each, until I find one I can live with. Because I can't live with Mastodon 5.0 the way it is now.
Yesterday tried Elk
Today trying Phanpy
Others in future:
Nicolium
I tried out a bunch in the past looking for something suitable specifically for watch parties, as even Mastodon 4.x was terrible when it came to autocompletion of hashtags (a constant & maddening frustration in a live, hashtag-based event like a watch party).
Most weren't right for that usage (for that, since last year I use LiveBlog by @stefan ) but now I'll evaluate them for general daily usage.
I'm even considering moving over to my alt account on Exquisite.social for daily usage, free from Mastodon 5.0, but also so I don't have to break a post like this into a pseudo-thread because of low character limits. Oh, and for that sweet, sweet Markdown formatting 😁. But migrating followed hashtags (I follow 1000's on ohai) seems a PITA.
Either way, no more Mastodon 5.0 for me! 🥳
