hey, can anyone tell me what my viable alternatives to NoMachine for remote access in a Linux client + Linux server environment are?
features I need:
* high performance for 2D desktop use both locally (fast WiFi 6 connection) and remotely (narrowest pipe 25Mbps downlink with 50ms ping, but usually much less constrained)
* audio support which works and works well (high fidelity for music, able to cope okay with mild jitter & ordinary network blips)
* able to both do full desktop sharing, and act like 'ssh -X' in that I can run an app on a remote box and its window(s) pop up on my local box and integrate seamlessly with my local desktop
* doesn't require any creepy "cloud" accounts and is not a vector for e.g. state security agents - I already have an overlay network setup so presumably it could Just Work over ZeroTier?
* costs either $0, or a one-time payment that isn't more than $50 for full unlimited or $5 per remote box, or if recurring is less than about $30/year for up to 15-20 remote boxes and 2-3 local ones
* strong wishlist item: ARM support on both ends of the pipe, not just x86
* wishlist item: the more explicit Proxmox support the better, right now I use SPICE a *lot*
my main issue is that with my (maybe/hopefully wrong?) understanding of their price structure, I can't really afford @NoMachine considering I have a couple client machines and a growing flock of VMs in the CouchLab, and I'm only going to have ever more VMs as the AIbro hardware shortage plus my own economic precarity forces me toward an old-laptop-as-thin-client model. so, it's time to survey my options once again.
currently I'm still on X on both ends of my setup, Wayland isn't a factor yet but I'm sure it will be soon enough.
thanks for any tips you can give! 🥰
