Today the Holy Synod of the OCA (Orthodox Church in America) elected Bishop Gerasim, who had been locum tenens of the Diocese of the South, as the official diocesan bishop. The parishes of the diocese voted to nominate him a couple months back. He had been the auxiliary bishop of the diocese for several years under Archbishop Alexander, who has now retired. The acclaim of the people must be accompanied by the approval of the Synod, which has now happened.

His official enthronement will occur on the weekend of 13–14 November.
