I’ve been thinking about the effect that air conditioning has had on US culture. Before home cooling, people had to leave the windows open in summer, sit on the front porch, be accessible to their neighbors. Family and neighborhood life was less private out of necessity.

A/C made it possible to keep windows closed and stay indoors year round. To not know who your neighbors are. A/C contributed to an isolated, atomized society.
