@bedirthan Oh, I'm sure you need to adjust your message and method of messaging based on where you are.
@ai6yr @bedirthan as an engineer in a safety field I have dealt with how to develop adequate safety warnings.
You need both styles to be effective. A warning without context is legal cya. It's the legal minimum, and doesn't actually care if people are hurt or not.
If you actually care about reaching people you need a human approach that relies on stories, on relationships, that speaks to the why.
Even professionals read the report to get the stories and the why, we don't blindly trust.
It's a good warning, that will reach people in a different way.
@sewblue @ai6yr I'm working on a talk about the need for big corporate security teams to share awareness in their neighborhoods, because trust is down and notification fatigue is up.
All comms are good.
That LA fires AAR pointed out that less than half the people in the evac zones knew they were supposed to evac (memory says 25%, but I'm lazy right now).
@bedirthan @ai6yr Nightmare fuel that is. I work in a space adjacent to that and know just how damn hard it is to get through to people. How much uncertainty there is in making these decisions.
You can go door to door and that still isn't enough.
I am glad they are starting to get away from the "watch vs warning" framing. I still have to take a beat to remember which is which. . The newer "Ready Set Go" will hopefully help people understand.
Any communication that works is the right communication method.
@sewblue @bedirthan We're all extremely close (professoinally) to these systems in this conversation, lol.
@ai6yr for context, Brevard County contains Viera and Titusville, known for infestations of affluenza-afflicted, magaty-brain addled boomers.
To say the population there is insufferable is being charitable.
I do wonder if this is just the tradition in the South?
(ie notice this during hurricanes, too, where instead of "The National Weather Service is warning of" it's "I asked my cousin Bob, who has a Facebook page, what he thought, and he thinks we're not going to have much impact from XYZ hurricane")
@ai6yr They had to raid the strategic exclamation mark reserve to complete this missive.
@ai6yr * Brevard County is.
@ai6yr I've seen counties use both and anecdotally some who tune out one style respond to the other.
