I think the main disadvantage of having been socialized by Star Trek is that I still assume everyone is an intelligent being and listens to reason.
@scy I suppose that I haven't committed suicide yet because I was asocialised by The Planet Of The Apes.
Yes, that happened to me as well. Took me a long time to un-learn that fallacy. I am still irate that it is a fallacy, why are there so many Neanderthals around?
@scy … and that people would care about discovery and advancement of the human condition, instead of just trying build and maintain their own little fiefdoms wherever they can, and collectively acting like locusts.
Yes, perhaps a bit of a reach, sadly.
@scy Same. And I despised Lord of the Flies when it was taught in school, where the bullies seem hell-bent on getting everyone killed.
And now the Hurr Durr Society runs most Western governments…
@scy
See! My advantage is that I was shaped by *Bonanza*. Things were pretty wild back then, just like they are today.
@scy I think I'm caught in some kind of Trek-loop! Two months ago, I started a rewatch of NG/DS9/Reboots as a comparative assessment and so I could watch more Star Trek. Chekov and Picard almost immediately passed on, and I was left feeling ghoulishly like I'd started the memorial service early and now might be viewed with suspicion. All of this is to say - I also take each new person as though they are reasonable until proven otherwise. As evidenced by my loop theory though, I am often wrong.
@scy "We look for things."
"Things that make us go. We need help."
@LangerJan See, there were no Pakleds in the Trek I watched when growing up.
(Yes there's TNG 2x17, I must've missed that one during the ZDF run.)
@scy @LangerJan I think of TNG I only missed "Conundrum", back in the day. I had a complete episode list already, because the first run was still delayed by a couple years.
@scy May I ask then, what was *your* first encounter with the Pakleds?
@LangerJan Probably still 2x17 when I first watched every TNG episode front to back in … 2018? 2019?
@scy
Look no further than Doctor Who to see most of them are evil...
