so, the Dutch news does an elaborate bit every year where, with a completely straight face, as if it’s literal factual news, they report on a last-second disaster that has befallen Sinterklaas on his journey to deliver presents to the children of the Netherlands, and the urgent hard work to overcome it and deliver the presents on time

Headline: all the piet costumes were destroyed in a drycleaning fire. Everyone’s scrambling to replace the costumes in time for the Amsterdam piets

I thought this was the bit. It’s not. A disaster has actually befallen Sinterklaas. And the article clarifies it’s literally true and not a bit

(NB: most people in NL don’t do the racist piet thing anymore. They are normal non-weird costumes)
