A few blocks east of me are the towns of Brentwood and North Brentwood. Until 2024, a metal barrier stood on a quiet road between them. Brentwood was a sundown town, all white. North Brentwood, in the flood zone, was where Black families lived. White residents once patrolled the barrier, throwing rocks to keep Black neighbors out. In 2024, the towns tore it down. Rather than erase that history, they commissioned a local sculptor to create a memorial to it, and to the lives it shaped.
