So I hate #AI as much as the next person
But I know enough about some things to be dangerous
I run my own #VPS and have for over a decade, but it has historically hung on a thread due to my limited abilities
I have written many #PHP scripts in almost 20 years, but many of them have had long standing bugs that I can’t fix due to my limited knowledge
All of this is self taught (most of the problem) (1/3)
Turns out it was infinite looping and has been the one reason my server would occasionally stall for 4-6 minutes at a time
For now it’s fixed with the help of an LLM. I can’t justify this to myself so how exactly should I undo this but not reintroduce the problems?
There is really no way to go back on some lines of code (3/3)
@crowdotblack I’ve used LLMs to also solve problems that I found no hope of solving. I try not to dwell on it much, but it is definitely a quandary to basically give up solving a problem or use a tool you know has a good chance of solving it. Use of an LLM is not my first answer, at least.
I do think there are appropriate uses for this technology (I use LLMs in much the same way you do: occasionally, for solving specific problems that I'd otherwise be stuck on).
As I see it, the core problem with AI usage (specifically) is that a lot of people see a tool, and then assume the tool should be used on absolutely everything. "When you're holding a hammer, every problem looks like a nail" and so on...
(and I'm not necessarily blaming people on the "user" side so much as the "provider" side trying really really hard to get everyone addicted to smashing things with hammers so they can start charging for them)
...so now we stand amid the ever-increasing wreckage caused by a new tool, and it's entirely understandable to feel like the tool is what's causing all these new problems...
...but of course that just lets the billionaire owners of the tool-factories get away with it.

Now when my server crashed last month. I spent quite a while trying to figure out why, mostly because search really sucks right now.
I finally went to an #LLM and it gave me my answer immediately
I was up and running in a couple of minutes, that’s a big deal. Down websites really stress me out
I have exactly one page that gets a mild public usage and people occasionally send me money for providing it. It has had 5 bugs and logical conflicts that I just never bothered to fix… (2/3)
