/me gets very annoyed when someone who covers events in some specific country on a professional or semi-professional level keeps mispronouncing names of people or places in that country
and, like, i get that some places have localized names and languages have phonological differences; i'm not going to expect people to talk about how they went to italy and traveled from Roma to Venezia and then visited Napoli or to expect someone to accurately say the tones in the names of chinese politicians
but if the city or person in question has no "localized name", i think it's one's duty to at least try and get the basic sounds right
like, both russian and ukrainian dictionaries have little stress marks over vowels to indicate where the word's stress lies, and you still hear people say "dmitri médvedev" or "volódymyr zelenskyy" even though you can easily look those names up and see they're actually "medvédev" and "volodýmyr"
english, russian and ukrainian all have lexical stress and don't restrict where it can be placed, am i wrong for expecting transcribed versions of names to actually match it?
