I don't understand how it's 2026, I have an M1 Max with 64 GB of RAM and an SSD, and somehow Apple Music stutters while playing music. BeOS could do this in the 90s from a floppy disk. (Well, maybe not from a floppy.. but still.)
@hoco restarting coreaudiod fixed it without a reboot. (Of course a reboot would have fixed it too, then.) Don't know why it was broken and half-working, though.
@bigzaphod QNX could do it from a floppy disk https://archive.org/details/QNX_incredible_1.44m_demo_v4.0
@slava whoa I think I remember trying that demo! Was crazy impressive.
@bigzaphod With how prevalent Macs are among music professionals, one could assume that things like "dropped samples" are not an issue here, and yet :/
@bigzaphod BeOS mentioned. 🥺
@bigzaphod also shuttering here on my iPhone. Maybe a streaming problem?
@high_lander not here - it was clearly failure to deliver the audio packets fast enough. That has a distinctive pop and hiss and such when the audio buffers are empty. Killing coreaudiod seems to have fixed it for me for now which suggests a reboot would also have fixed it.
@bigzaphod rebooting used to be a Windows-way to fix things. 😬
@high_lander I think of that every time these problems come up. 😞
@bigzaphod well, def from a 30MB/sec PATA drive.
@bigzaphod your hardware is good enough but macos is crap ...
@bigzaphod streaming means net splits come for anyone anytime
@bigzaphod This is how I feel about basically any iPhone of the last 5 years taking a few seconds to "turn on the camera".
@bigzaphod take us back to BeOS!
@bigzaphod could not agree more with so many things in modern tech.
@bigzaphod -- so many things were much better in the 80s. think about the tools we used for writing and how much variety there was. instead we're typing into tiny little text boxes and scattering our writing all over the world.
@bigzaphod The Apple Music app failing to do in 2020 what iTunes 4.7 did extremely well in 2005 is what started my move away from Apple.
It’s just unfathomable.
@bigzaphod There are too many tasks to schedule and process without hitting deadlines. Also, the audio code is maybe displaced by JS apps running at user interactive QoS. I dream of going back to multiplexing DOS apps on OS/2. We don’t have to go that far back, though, to fix it. (Sorry if this was rhetorical, lol)
@bigzaphod try using shortcuts app. It just freezes every damn time you try to wait the shortcut
@bigzaphod I wonder what else was running at the same time, competing for resources. I use Activity Monitor to see what is hogging resources. Sometimes it's a program I'm not even using, that has no window anymore, but it hangs out in the process table doing *something*. Indexing a hard drive for search happens in the background but it can suck up *a lot* of resources.
And, browsers can have a lot of tabs open that suck up a lot of resources because the javascript in them might be active.
Some of the problem is definitely Apple's fault. iTunes used to be simple and great. Some of it is how our computer gets used "on our behalf" to do things other than what we are trying to accomplish at the moment.
