How to (NOT?) start a morning at the in-laws.
In the kitchen:
Person A: There is a big difference when I run dishes through water before putting them in the dishwasher.
Person B: Sure but it's not very ecological.
Me to person B: It's a bit ironic to hear such a remark considering your heavy use of LLMs, which consume so much water and are an ecological disaster.
Person A was not aware of this, so brownie points for me. Person B disagreed with me. I have NO REGRETS. F**K Data Centers. #NoAI
@_elena So two other things: (a) rinsing the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher is mostly to remove large food matter that's too big for the dishwasher's drain and (b) it flushes tepid water out of the hot water pipes, making the dishwasher more effective.

I have this type of friends. They buy A+ LED lamps for eco reasons, and in the same time “my car eats 25 l of gas and 1 l of oil per 100 km, I regret nothing”

@_elena The human mind has great difficulties with scale and proportions of numbers – most people readily equal washing machine consumption with air travel or meat consumptin because those numbers are too abstract.
@_elena it's so staggering that people don't know that datacenters use water like a small country does, and pollute everything!
And yes, AI is the worst, for its ecological impact and for the fact that the companies that run it are led by men who lack such empathy and who seem to all lean to the far right (Probably because they figure that gives them more control over the general public)
@sylvia ABSOLUTELY. I'm a little crushed that @emilymbender and @alex 's superb book #TheAICon won't have a French translation ready by Christmas because my extended family is 100% AI-pilled and I was going to gift everyone the book...

@efialto I won't be lectured on "ecology" by someone who heavily uses LLMs. Not now, not ever. And no judgement or shame but I am also a lifelong vegetarian, the other person is not... the number one thing that has an environmental impact is the meat industry (deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, land use, etc.) so yeah. I stand by what I said.

@_elena AI aside: the difference doesn't come from pre-rinsing, it's putting in a tiny bit of cleaner in the machine for the first cycle!
Since I started doing that I always have perfect results with the dishwasher, no matter how dirty the dishes are.
