One project I've started tackling (by exploring if I can port some text-rendering code that's up to my standards) is the "merephone". This is a featurephone designed to offer only the features you need on the go, nothing distracting!
Planned features:
* Calling & texting with an addressbook
* Autolock with password
* Clock
* Calendar with notifications
* Calculator
* File viewer (I'm primarily interested in audio)
* Better-than-nothing camera
* QR code scanning
* NFC file/contact-sharing
1/2!
I reason that to make this work well I'd need nice text-entry & menu navigation! I'm thinking a joystick-switch & 2 buttons for primary input, a grayscale eink screen for primary output. Though I still have to get around to experimenting with joystick-typing.
This would be very power-efficient, & *just* enough to offer those features without getting clunky.
The most open-ended of the features I listed would be that file-viewer...
