Fellow Melburnians! I have a favour to ask.
I'm compiling a definitive list of Melbourne icons for a project I have in mind, and I'd appreciate your help. By Melbourne icon I mean it must be widely recognised as such across the city; so your favourite local pub might not qualify, but the Espy in St Kilda would. (Having said that, I'm sure the final list will reflect my own biases.)
To give you an idea, here are the first 25 entries on my list, which has grown to 120 items so far:
Flinders Street Station
Princes Bridge
Montague Street Bridge
Queen Victoria Market
Melbourne Town Hall
Melbourne GPO building
Trades Hall
Parliament House
Windsor Hotel
Bourke & Wills statue
Hook turns
Federation Square
MCG
Royal Botanic Gardens
Skipping Girl Vinegar sign
Nylex clock
Trams
Southern Cross Station
Werribee Mansion
Luna Park
Acland Street cake shops
Esplanade Hotel
Canary Island Date Palms
West Gate Bridge
Vault
This list suggests no precedence BTW, it's just the order in which they popped into my head.
What else can you suggest? All suggestions welcome. Also, please boost for reach.
@timrichards For better or worse:
• Chadstone shopping centre
• Dandenong Ranges National Park (Sherbrooke Forest and Mount Dandenong)
• Point Nepean
• NGV
• Chapel Street
• Camberwell Junction
• Cooks’ Cottage
• Some of the CBD lanes, lessee: Hardware Lane, Degraves Street, Hosier Lane.
• Myer Music Bowl (perhaps this is built into Botanic Gardens)
• Several Zoos Victoria properties (there are three arguably in Melbourne)
• Pin Oak Court aka Ramsay Street
• Explodey gas things on Southbank, do they still do those?
