I pulled apart a milkweed seed pod to experience all the textures.

Part of a milkweed seed pod. The outside is pale lemony colored, and looks like meringue with little tips that come up and gently fall over, darker at the tips. The inside of this shell is almost white, textured like loofah.

The seeds inside an open pod. They're perfectly arranged in rows like a clamshell quilt, tear drop shapes that are darker and a bit fatter in the middle, and lighter around the edges, like they've been satin stitched with a palette brown thread.

Seen through a magnifying loupe, a pile of the brown seeds that have been removed from their white parasails, with the parasails still neatly arranged in the original clam shell pattern. The hairs haven't separated yet, and they look like matchsticks.

A single seed still attached to its parasails, with all the fine white threads separated and flowing out in all directions to catch the wind.

Dispersed

A gray gravel path on the right, and short green grass on the left, followed by taller grasses. The short green grass is dotted with milkweed fluff that has flown in the wind.
