Every time I walk my dogs and I pass by someone with their dogs off leash (in a legally on-leash area), I now tell my dogs "we love leashes. leashes keep us safe. we love leashes. leashes keep us safe."
I'm hoping (probably in vain) this will help inspire people to do the right thing.
@thedaemon I've never intend to let my dogs get hurt, but stuff happens--especially when off-leash dogs run faster than I can get me and my dogs to a safe area.
It's such a difficult situation to handle, we do our best and just wish others could do the same. At least if you are still in Colorado there are plenty of parks and nature that you can try to avoid the hustle and bustle of off leash dogs. I don't think the attitude of "my dog doesn't bite" is really that helpful either when the dog is off leash and I have my dog with me. Sheesh, anyways. I feel you.
@thedaemon @lattera I would rather that more areas allowed dogs off-leash; it's a better environment for many of them but of course, you have to understand their general temperament and have decent recall etc, and be able to spot when that's not working as well as you might want, and be able to intervene quickly, preferably proactively.
We call ours away from approaching dogs on leashes, there are lots of reasons they might be on-leash, and we try to ask if they want a sniff or not.

It's usually the unruly small dogs that come over and try to harass larger dogs. I always wonder why the owners have a death wish about their dog. Personally I love my dog and would not let another dog eat it, but that's just me? I had quite a few dogs at a camp site, come running up to my medium sized dog while we were out walking. Leases are required at this camp site...
