>But these days, nobody really believes that negative change can be stopped: the forces involved seem to be too powerful, and indeed with the passage of generations, the idea that there were societies where public services worked, where the streets were safe and everybody had a job, seems more and more like some kind of utopian fantasy. So the violence today has reached a third phase: that of revenge and nihilistic destruction for its own sake. The progress towards an ever-worse society and an ever-worse life cannot be arrested: all that can be done is to carry out acts of revenge against those who are bringing it about. Nothing positive can be anticipated from smashing up town halls and shopping centres, true, but then nothing positive can be expected from anything anyway.

@hakui spends so much time talking about how different these riots are from 1968, and no mention of hte obvious fact that the people themselves are different. he acknowledges their problems, sure, but doesn't mention that they're foreigners who moved to a land they feel no connection to-- he frames it as just another point in a broader "crisis of meaning," them being used as pawns to a political struggle between the adults' different philosophies. how very french, pontificating on retarded high-minded minutiae while barbarians just smash shit and dgaf.
@bajax everyone knows migrants feel like foreigners in the land and act accordingly
the worry is that natives might also increasingly feel like they are foreigners in their own land and we are approaching that tipping point where they have nothing left to lose
