enemy exploration AI now searches for the player and learns your habits
whenever it sees a tile without you, it makes that tile as "cold." whenever it fully spots you, it marks that tile as permanently slightly hotter. when it partially spots you, it marks the areas where you could have moved to as warmer. it moves to hot places and avoids cold places.
this means:
if it spots you, it chases you. if it catches a hint of you, it starts searching the nearby area. if it hasn't seen you in a while, it'll systemically search the dungeon and occasionally circle back to thoroughly check places it knows you've been before. it also guesses where you're going based on where you were last seen running.
i took a note from dark souls combat AI, and instead of always moving to the hottest spot, it randomly rolls where to aim for weighted by heat.
to be honest, this whole thing was trying to port the core design behind dark souls combat AI to non-combat gameplay. it really works well here, creating something aggressive and threatening and somewhat unpredictable. trying to escape from these guys is genuinely nervewracking even when you know how to do it.

@All_bonesJones Is the sprite work handmade or AI? It looks good either way
