The Japanese cruiser Izumo moored in the Whangpoo - today Huangpu - river with the skyline of Shanghai's Bund in the background. This is a black-and-white photo from mid-1937. The river is very wide with multiple smaller boats out and about. The skyline is a row of 8-10 story buildings in a late 1800s London-bank-building style and was considered to be very impressively western for the time.
