Arnt Gulbrandsen wrote a new link parsing library called UTS58 that Mastodon just switched to. This huge undertaking was one of the main blockers to creating a truely #GloballyInclusiveFediverse! Mastodon historically used a library made and maintained by Twitter for all link-ification but when Twitter changed owners they abandoned their library and with it any direct route for Mastodon to support links and handles that it didn't support. Soon accounts like @north will display correctly.

Really excited to see progress on this effort after many many years of stalled discussion. Thanks to @Edent, @hongminhee, @lnkr, @north and @evan as well for their recent work on this matter, I can now see a fediverse in sight that supports the world's languages fully!
Addendum: if anyone knows what Arnt Gulbrandsen's fediverse handle is I would love to properly thank them!
I had written @north @ဪ.com but the older library actually managed to grab it and turn it into a working mention, but it isn't able to display it correctly like https://ဪ.com it would break in various places
