# Changes coming to meet.jit.si
I had missed this announcement:

@neil I feel that this announcement is rather... sparse. No justification given, etc.
@steve My guess is either:
a) some kind of abuse mitigation, or
b) upsell / payment required for longer meetings.
@neil I assume it might be to reduce their TURN server costs (at least, I assume they run TURN servers?). But for the upsell thing I would have expected them to... you know, actually upsell. i.e. instead of saying "meetings are now limited" the announcement would have been "free meetings are now limited, but you can buy unlimited meetings for £x"
@neil 95 minutes is way to much for any meeting :)
I self-hosted Jitsi for years, and it was great.
But, a few months ago, I decided that I just wasn't using it enough to justify retaining it. So I switched to offering Signal instead.
I meant to look at other, light touch, in-browser, FOSS options, but I haven't got round to it yet.
@neil same here. We switched to BBB, though it's a pain to go past firewalls, needs a stun server or some similar devilry. After that it works ok, but everyone seems shocked by its interface.
@neil senfcall, powered by big blue button?
@ljrk Isn't BBB even more resource hungry than jitsi?
@neil Ah fair, I wasn't sure you were looking for a self-hosted solution or something hosted by a friendly collective. I think BBB scales quite well... for bigger/lecture like conferences. But it's probably overkill for smaller meetings. We used it a lot (self-hosted) at my uni
@neil I have a Nextcloud Talk sitting idle here. Usually if we need something we mostly default to Signal as well. It might just not be worth it.
@kobold It is not, as j moved away from Nextcloud too :)
What did you move to? I use NextCloud mostly for three things:
I'd rather not have a massive pile of PHP that wants to be a do-everything platform for that limited set of uses.
@neil What did you move to? Moving off NC requires me to host multiple applications to get to the same feature set and even more need to keep an eye on issues.
@neil That's a shame, I use meet.jit.si for some things, although 95 minutes for free is more generous than any other competitor I'm aware of.
I know some providers have locked down their Jitsi instances to prevent abuse (e.g. Debian only allows you to join if you have a Salsa account), so perhaps this is a similar move.
