Today's random annoyance: When we have perfectly good systems based on the actual physical world, and throw them out as businesses don't like them.

We had a PERFECTLY good system where 12 o'clock is when the sun is highest in the sky (±30 minutes) but businesses insist on everything starting at 8:00, so we have to change that to permanent daylight savings time
To be clear, I don't mind everyone's day starting later when it's bright out in winter, I just think we should legislate a standard business start time instead of changing the clock.
I would in fact commission a team of psychologists to study what the optimal business start time would be instead of just arbitrarily picking 1 hour later than normal.
@Canageek I mean, just stop changing the clocks and start work at 7:30 or whatever. Split the difference. Or just always start at 8 and don't worry about it.
People complain, "But oh, this group or that group is negatively affected by darkness in the morning." Tell that to the people who die of heart attack, stroke or auto accidents every time-change. It's clearly documented that these numbers spike every time.
I don't get why fixing this is so hard when people are dying.
@raven Also, I thought that it had been shown that the number of heart attacks remained constant around the time changes, they were just much more likely to happen right after the time change?
So if you were going to have a heart attack that week, you're more likely to have it the day of the time change, but the number of heart attacks drop the rest of the week as a result?
@Canageek I'm not familiar with that. But I know the number of car accidents goes up.

@Canageek I would take that over changing the time twice a year. But splitting the difference would work... just be a half-hour off. Other countries do that. India Standard Time is half an hour off (5:30 hours ahead of UTC), Western Australia is as well.
