Discussion
Getting annoyed looking at the constant slopcoding discourse on Lobsters, so I guess I will start bulking up my feed reader entries again. I wish people put their RSS/Atom feed links more clearly on their websites, but luckily it seems like the Blog Quest browser extension can at least find them decently well. Accumulated a decent number of things in there.
If anybody has any fun non-slop blogs to recommend, I will happily take suggestions too.
@Samsai adding this via "alternate" link is usually the way to go. This is where feed readers look for feeds.
Or do you mean that's also missing on websites that do have feeds?
@bekopharm Perhaps I am doing it wrong, but usually when I want to subscribe to a site I look for the a link to the Atom/RSS feed somewhere on the website, copy that link over to my Elfeed configuration and I am done. But quite a few websites don't have any such visible links but surprisingly often there is a feed hidden somewhere and that's when I rely on Blog Quest to find it. It might be in some site metadata, but to be honest I have never tested if Elfeed can resolve such metadata.
@Samsai browsers used to read that for you and offer adding feeds based on this meta data. This was removed when Google decided to remove that feature and everyone followed. There are still extensions for this and yes your RSS reader should totally be able to read all and let you choose.
Yeah an additional icon for humans is nice but that works only really well for a single feed and that's simply out of fashion 🤷
I'm with you on that btw. Mine still has such an icon (but also ActivityPub :D)
@bekopharm I had a quick browse through the documentation of my feed reader and I don't think it's that fancy. But I guess I can just live with the browser extension finding the feeds and then I can copy the ones I like into Elfeed.
And yeah, it's a shame that the browser mafia decided to trade simple and effective tech like RSS/Atom feeds for walled garden social media. Maybe we'll end up "rediscovering" it eventually.
