It feels like there is kind of a marxist argument which could be made; that back when computers were new and the internet was the wild and untamed, computers were kind of perceived as liberating, because they were new and largely unshaped by the base economic structure underpinning everything.
AND now the enshitification of everything; the death of the open decentralized web; the LLM implosion/explosion; the many criseses of ethics in free software, etc, etc. IT's all tremors and aftershocks of the digital culture aligning with the superstructure; being shaped by the fundamental base economic structure.
FLOSS was successful enough for a time, it's just now part of that superstructure.
