@GeertJan @catileptic it would make sense for them to use their own compute for whatever back-end tasks (translation, text extrusion, C&C, etc) they need to perform, even if devices that are tied to the troll accounts are hosted in Vietnam, Indonesia, or wherever else.

Now that compute is largely gone.

As I was quoted saying in the Guardian article, these influence operations might well be affected by those datacenter strikes, but the effects will be much more indirect.

i am especially sad to see folx who pretend to talk about technicalities and about the "exact definitions" of the technologies involved (bots etc.) lean heavily into this kind of rhetoric that minimizes the heavy contribution of Russian authorities to a toxic online environment

some of these takes come from people who live far from the Eastern block where drones are crashing

some of these folx want to be right more than they want people to be safe
