@phasorburn @central A Telstar board in a wooden whiskey box with switches sticking out of it is the most homebrew setup I've heard of in this thread. Coleco did sell a Telstar Classic in a wood case but a whiskey box beats that
@central @SinclairSpeccy
I even got a picture of the original box this week
@ATLeagle @central @SinclairSpeccy Absolutely *the* computer font of the time, in media of any kind. Even moreso than letters made of LED dots or bars. Wish I knew a keyword to find out more about that font's history.
@slowenough @ATLeagle @central The keyword you're after is "Moore Computer" I think. Fonts In Use has a good page on its history: https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/7324/moore-computer
@central @SinclairSpeccy 6th gen*
*played some games on someone elses ps1 very sparingly before that but my first console and the one I view more as my own in the ps2
@DaveyJJJones @central 6th gen here too. The one that was actually yours is the one that counts I feel
I really want to say 1st gen, but I only got to touch those in Sears for a few minutes, back in the days when they had those walls of TVs, and I don't think that counts...
@JulieSqveakaroo @central I reckon the Sears TV wall counts. A few minutes on one of those is still a core memory
@central @SinclairSpeccy Wow, lot of oldheads on here! Wii/PS3 for us.
@central Which one does the game boy color count as part of? That was our first system, but we didn't get a non-handheld until gamecube
(not counting our dad's atari 2600 here)

I mean, the first console I had was a NES, but I had a spectrum I used for gaming before that. So the first console I had was a NES.
My favorites were my PC Engine and OG Playstation though.
@Haikyoneko @central A Speccy before the NES is a good way to start. The PC Engine and OG PlayStation are great picks for favourites too
@central @SinclairSpeccy I’m skewing this because I started with a C64 (technically a C128) in the mid 80s, but didn’t get a console until the XBox (it was hacked seven ways to Sunday) and then the PS3 when I actually started to main console gaming (at this point I was Windows free!).
I did play Pong earlier than that.
@yon @central @SinclairSpeccy I voted for 4th Gen with the Sega Megadrive but this was after years of ZX81, CP/M, MS-DOS, Spectrum and Amiga gaming. 😀
Now I'm all about the Xbox Series X, retro-gaming, and Sunflowers on my phone.
@thomasbeagle @central @SinclairSpeccy I like the appliance thing with consoles. I just want to play, I don’t want to fiddle around.
Old computers were a bit like that. Just boot up and load the game. Not updates etc.
@yon @central @SinclairSpeccy You don't remember reconfiguring MS-DOS autoexec.bat and config.sys desperately trying to get enough memory to make the game work? 😀
@thomasbeagle @central @SinclairSpeccy Got a PC (P90) late 95 or early 96. So Win95 already.
And I have zero nostalgia for anything related to Microsoft 😊 NT on my dual P200 was neat though as I ran the server and played on the same computer. Quake!
@yon @thomasbeagle @central A C128 then a hacked OG Xbox is a great combo and this whole autoexec.bat vs Win95 back and forth is peak old too. Running the server and playing Quake on the same dual P200 sounds like a fun setup
@central @SinclairSpeccy laughs in mono rasters
@druid @SinclairSpeccy 2nd ig the thing came out in 1982
@central@oldbytes.space @SinclairSpeccy@oldbytes.space Have never owned a console, but played the earliest pong type things, including one that was a Telstar board installed inside a wooden whiskey box with switches sticking out of it.
