ok so here's a little poll inspired by my friend @span SinclairSpeccy :
which console generation did you start out with?

I *played* first gen, but I never actually *owned* a classic console... although you could almost consider my TI 99/4A a console system (1983, third gen) since it did have a cartridge slot and would play games that way... I was using it mainly for BASIC, though. It was 1986 before I really started using computers for games, and then said computers were way bigger than your basic console, and would do way more than simply play games, they just happened to _also_ do that. (I played _way_ too much Hack...)
@stonebear2 @central With the TI-99/4A having a cartridge slot for games I reckon it counts as an honorary console. Learning BASIC on it and then playing way too much Hack later sounds like a proper computer kid path
@central @SinclairSpeccy for me an MSX here in the Netherlands, but maybe that qualifies more as a computer. But for me it was a console with its cassette tapes etc.
@colorcoded @central An MSX in the Netherlands makes a lot of sense with Philips making so many of them. If it played the role of a console for you then I reckon it counts
@central @SinclairSpeccy I had a Pong game that hooked up to the black and white TV set. The cat would bap at the “ball” as it bounced around the screen.
@mithriltabby @central The cat trying to bap the ball is the best detail in this whole thread. Sounds like the cat got as much use out of that Pong game as you did
@central @SinclairSpeccy My dad borrowed an NES in 1995. that was my first videogame experience. folloeed SNES, Playstation , a long gap of PC and now Switch2
@central@oldbytes.space @SinclairSpeccy@oldbytes.space I selected 6th - my first home console was the PS2.
That being said my first handheld was the original GameBoy - I’m not completely sure which generation that would be.

@sigmasternchen @central The original Game Boy came out in 1989 so it's 4th gen. Your handheld was actually a couple of generations older than your PS2 (6th gen) so either answer works
@central @SinclairSpeccy My first video game? 1985 probably. My first console. Nintendo Switch, three years after its release.
@central @SinclairSpeccy strictly speaking, 8088-based PC, but, what generation is the original GameBoy?
@mirabilos @central The original Game Boy came out in 1989 so it's 4th gen so same era as the SNES and Mega Drive. An 8088 PC as a first gaming machine is a great answer too
@central @SinclairSpeccy where does the Spectrum go in this list?
@central @SinclairSpeccy If I had a handheld before any non-portable console should I count the gen of the handheld or ignore it and put the gen of the first non-portable I had? I think I had a GBA, then NES a bit later.
Then there's also the problem that comes with all these "when did you first x" questions, does it count if you were so young you barely remember anything? Were you even really a person at that point? I probably used someone's GBC before I had my own GBA, but not sure.

@bard @central Bella's poll so it's her call but I'd count the handheld since it's still a console which would make your GBA 6th gen. For the memory thing I'd go with the first one you actually remember playing. "Were you even really a person at that point" is a very real question with these polls though
@central @SinclairSpeccy where amiga or c64?
@SinclairSpeccy @central Like a dedicated Pong in a wooden case
@central @SinclairSpeccy C64, 3DS, Switch, XBOX Series S, Switch 2
@SinclairSpeccy @central there was PC gaming in between, but that is not a console so I left it out 😅
@central I forget which model it was, but my first console was one of those Pong-and-variants ones, so I guess it was 1st gen. After that came a long reign by the Atari 2600.
@central @SinclairSpeccy PC Masterrace all the way 😉 Did dabble in PS4 about ten years ago, though.
I cant seem to learn using a controller…
